In the last decade, it has become more and more important that a company express its commitment to the environment.
In our day, such commitment cannot be neglected nor can it be relegated to a simple managerial act. It must be promoted in terms of all aspects of the company’s endeavours as a way of obtaining sustainable development.
Economic agents are increasingly aware of the quantitative and qualitative advantages which this environmental emphasis can represent, and the extent to which they translate most notably into greater international competitiveness and an enhanced image with the public.
It was in the 1990s that ANA pro-actively assumed its responsibilities in regard to the impact that its activities could have on the environment. This new position took form in 1995 , with the issuance of its Environmental Policy, which brought together the full dynamic force of socio-economic policy, environmental awareness and the partnerships of many interested parties which put it on a path toward Sustainable Development.
The first step was one that sparked the implementation of a strategy that put ANA, SA on the path of ever-continuing advancement in terms of its environmental commitment, one which can currently be seen in the existence of an Environmental Structure consisting: of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for environmental management at airports and in various branches of the Company, of the development and implementation of a Environmental Management System – Corporate Level applicable to the entire Company, and of the development of Integrated Management Systems (Quality, Environment, Airport Safety, and Safety, Hygiene and Health in the Workplace) for all airports.
As an end-goal of this strategy, ANA, SA intend to pursue certification for each one of its systems, thus enabling the public to acknowledge the efforts which the Company has taken in the area of environmental protection.
(1- In 1995, the company – Aeroportos e Navegação Aérea (ANA, E.P.) – was publicly owned but then in 1999, following some internal change, namely the spin off of ANA, E.P. into ANA, SA (ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, S.A.), it became a privately-held company responsible for airport management. Policies in force at that time were then revised)
